With «AGAINST EXPECTATION”, the artists transform Counter Space at different levels into a space for research and production, in order to eventually use it as an exhibition space for the site-specific work. The structure is a montage of various elements, which are not really suited for the actual space but detached in-between reality and fiction and at the same time reminding of the space.
The elements selected relate to an ascertainable past as much as an impending future. For example, the gravel area next door at Seeburgpark Zurich, still reminds of the plot size of a mansion, which was demolished in 1970s. Stories suggest that a cellar can be found underneath. Today, a pavilion-like structure divides the park from the adjacent building complex, within which Counter Space is located. In this way, allusions, speculations and traditions condense into a site-specific meshwork and overlay the present space with an imaginary landscape.
The exhibition «AGAINST EXPECTATION» by Efa Mühlenthaler and Françoise Caraco responds to the changing artistic methodology in sceneries or settings and develops new ways of dealing with temporary spaces.
